Updated October 2026

Thor Kitchen's L-Series (LRG) and A-Series (ARG) gas ranges share the same basics: an 18,000 BTU or stronger power burner, continuous cast-iron grates, a convection oven and Thor's 2-year parts and labor warranty. Pick the L-Series for classic black knob controls, the widest size choice (24 to 60 inches) or a built-in griddle on the 48-inch LRG4807U. Pick the A-Series for an LED oven display with Pizza and Keep Warm modes, bigger ovens at 30 and 48 inches, eight burners on the ARG48, or black or white finishes with bronze trim.

Both lines come from Thor Kitchen, a Southern California company that designs in the US and builds in its own overseas factory with US oversight. Thor has retired most of its older HRG Professional ranges, so today the most common Thor gas range question is LRG vs ARG. We're an authorized Thor dealer, and every model below is current in our store. For more on the brand, read our Thor Kitchen review.

30-Inch: LRG3001U vs ARG30

The LRG3001U fits five burners into 30 inches: an 18,000 BTU power burner, a 9,000 BTU oval middle burner and three smaller burners down to 4,000 BTU. Its 4.55 cu. ft. oven has a commercial convection fan and a reflective tube broiler.

The ARG30 has four burners, from 18,000 BTU down to a 3,500 BTU simmer burner, and a slightly larger 4.8 cu. ft. convection oven. Its oven runs from buttons with an LED display and includes Pizza and Keep Warm modes. Choose the LRG3001U if you often cook with five pans at once. Choose the ARG30 for the bigger oven and the lower simmer.

36-Inch: LRG3601U vs ARG36

This is the closest match-up. Both ranges have six burners and a 6.0 cu. ft. convection oven. The LRG3601U has two 18,000 BTU burners (78,000 BTU total), handy for searing in two pans at once. The ARG36 has one 18,000 BTU, three 12,000 BTU and two 9,000 BTU burners (72,000 BTU total).

The bigger difference is the control panel. The LRG3601U uses seven black knobs, one for the oven. The ARG36 uses six burner knobs plus push-button oven controls with an LED display. It comes in five finishes: stainless steel, black, white, black with bronze trim and white with bronze trim.

48-Inch: LRG4807U vs ARG48

Shopping for a Thor 48 inch gas range? These two take different approaches. The LRG4807U has six burners (one 18,000 BTU and five 12,000 BTU) plus a 15,000 BTU griddle, over two ovens of 4.6 and 2.2 cu. ft. Choose it for a built-in griddle for pancakes, smash burgers and breakfast for a crowd. Its smallest burner is 12,000 BTU.

The ARG48 skips the griddle and uses the full width for eight burners: a 22,000 BTU dual burner with an 800 BTU simmer setting, two 18,000 BTU, three 12,000 BTU and two 9,500 BTU burners. Its ovens are larger at 4.8 and 2.8 cu. ft. (7.6 total). Thor lists convection bake for both ovens, and each oven has a telescopic rack. The ARG48 also comes in black, white, black with bronze trim and white with bronze trim.

60-Inch: LRG60E (L-Series Only)

The A-Series stops at 48 inches. For a 60-inch range, the LRG60E has six sealed burners from 3,500 to 18,000 BTU plus a cast-iron grill and griddle (Thor counts eight burners in total), and two 4.8 cu. ft. ovens. Backlit oven knobs set the mode and temperature. A propane version, the LRG60ELP, is also available. At the small end, the L-Series includes the 24-inch LRG2401U.

Which Should You Choose?

  • Choose the L-Series (LRG) if you want simple knob controls, a 24- or 60-inch size, a griddle at 48 inches, or the most burner power at 36 inches.
  • Choose the A-Series (ARG) if you want a digital oven display with Pizza and Keep Warm modes, a bigger oven at 30 or 48 inches, eight burners with a low simmer at 48 inches, or bronze trim.
  • Uneven floor? A-Series legs adjust up to 3 inches, versus 1 inch on the 30-, 36- and 48-inch L-Series, which makes it easier to line up with your countertop.
  • Price: The two series sit close together. In our store today, the ARG36 and ARG48 cost less than the LRG3601U and LRG4807U, while the two 30-inch models are within a few percent of each other. Check each product page for current pricing.

Where the S-Series and X-Series Fit

The S-Series is a streamlined line of 30- and 36-inch ranges with metal knobs and convection ovens. In our store it is currently priced below both the A-Series and the L-Series at the same widths.

The X-Series is Thor's top tier, with gas, dual fuel and induction ranges. The 36-inch XRG36E adds Italian brass burners, a 22,000 BTU dual burner, an infrared broiler, telescopic racks, a soft-close door and self-clean.

Hood Sizing for Thor Gas Ranges

A common rule of thumb is about 100 CFM of hood airflow for every 10,000 BTU of cooktop output, with a hood at least as wide as the range. Using Thor's burner ratings, that works out to roughly:

  • 30-inch: about 450 CFM (LRG3001U) or 425 CFM (ARG30)
  • 36-inch: about 780 CFM (LRG3601U) or 720 CFM (ARG36)
  • 48-inch: about 930 CFM (LRG4807U, including the griddle) or 1,130 CFM (ARG48)
  • 60-inch: about 935 CFM (LRG60E, including the grill and griddle)

All of these are above 400 CFM, where many local codes require make-up air, so check with your installer before you buy. Our guide to CFM ratings for range hoods explains the math, or shop Thor range hoods.

Save With a Thor Appliance Package

Both series are available in Thor Kitchen appliance packages that pair the range with a hood, refrigerator, dishwasher or microwave drawer. Packages cost less than buying each piece separately, and one CPS protection plan can cover the whole package. To compare every size, browse all Thor ranges.

Thor LRG vs ARG FAQ

What is the difference between Thor LRG and ARG ranges?

LRG is Thor's L-Series and ARG is its A-Series. Both are pro-style gas ranges with continuous cast-iron grates, convection ovens and a 2-year parts and labor warranty. The L-Series uses knob oven controls and comes in 24 to 60 inches, with a griddle on the 48- and 60-inch models. The A-Series uses push-button oven controls with an LED display, comes in 30, 36 and 48 inches, and offers bronze-trim finishes.

Which Thor 48-inch gas range has more burners, the LRG4807U or the ARG48?

The ARG48 has eight burners, including a 22,000 BTU dual burner with an 800 BTU simmer setting, and 7.6 cu. ft. of total oven space. The LRG4807U has six burners plus a 15,000 BTU griddle and 6.8 cu. ft. of total oven space.

Do Thor L-Series and A-Series ranges come in propane?

Yes. Both series have separate liquid propane (LP) models, such as the LRG3601ULP and the ARG36LP. Choose the LP model if your home runs on propane.

What size range hood do I need for a Thor 36-inch gas range?

Use a hood at least 36 inches wide. At about 100 CFM per 10,000 BTU, the LRG3601U (78,000 BTU) calls for roughly 780 CFM and the ARG36 (72,000 BTU) roughly 720 CFM. Above about 400 CFM, many codes require make-up air, so check your local code.
