Learn All About the MRCOOL Hyper Heat Series

Updated October 2026

MRCOOL Hyper Heat is MRCOOL's line of cold-climate heat pumps. The current Hyper Heat 2nd Gen central ducted system pairs an outdoor heat pump condenser with a multi-position ducted air handler, uses R-454B refrigerant, and is rated by MRCOOL to heat at outdoor temperatures as low as -22°F and cool at up to 122°F. For homes without ductwork, MRCOOL also makes DIY Hyper Heat ductless mini splits with the same -22°F to 122°F operating range.

We first published this guide in 2023 about the 1st Gen Hyper Heat system, which we no longer sell. We've rewritten it around the Hyper Heat models we carry today, using MRCOOL's published specifications and warranty terms.

What Is the MRCOOL Hyper Heat 2nd Gen System?

MRCOOL Hyper Heat 2nd Gen ducted air handler, outdoor heat pump condenser, MRCOOL Smart Thermostat and No-Vac line set

Hyper Heat 2nd Gen is a central ducted split system, so your home needs ductwork. Each system has three main parts:

  • An outdoor heat pump condenser in one of five sizes: 24K, 30K, 36K, 48K or 60K BTU (2 to 5 tons).
  • A variable-speed ducted air handler that moves conditioned air through your ducts.
  • The MRCOOL Smart Thermostat, which comes with the system.

We offer Hyper Heat 2nd Gen as a condenser and air handler set, as a set with an R-454B No-Vac line set in 15, 25, 35 or 50 ft lengths, or as a set with an electric heat kit. Check each listing to see exactly what's included.

Cold-Climate Performance

Cold-weather heating is what sets Hyper Heat apart. MRCOOL rates the 2nd Gen system to heat at outdoor temperatures as low as -22°F and to cool at up to 122°F, and its catalog lists all five sizes as ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certified.

For extra backup heat on the coldest days, the air handler accepts an optional electric heat kit. We carry the VersaPro & Hyper Heat 2nd Gen R-454B heat kits from 5 to 20 kW, such as the 10 kW MVPHK10. Your installer can help you choose the right size for your heat load and electrical service.

Efficiency Ratings

SEER2 measures cooling efficiency and HSPF2 measures heating efficiency, and higher is better for both. The federal minimum for new split-system heat pumps is 14.3 SEER2 and 7.5 HSPF2. Hyper Heat 2nd Gen systems are rated from 16 to 18.3 SEER2, depending on size:

Size SEER2 HSPF2 (Region IV)
24K (2 ton) 18.3 10
30K (2.5 ton) 16.8 10
36K (3 ton) 17.4 10.3
48K (4 ton) 16.5 9.5
60K (5 ton) 16 9

R-454B Refrigerant

Hyper Heat 2nd Gen uses R-454B, which has a global warming potential (GWP) of 465, compared with 2,088 for R-410A. Under EPA rules, new residential and light commercial air conditioning and heat pump systems have had to use a refrigerant with a GWP under 700 since January 1, 2025. Residential systems built entirely from components made or imported before that date can still be installed, and existing R-410A systems can still be repaired and serviced. Our R-454B vs. R-410A guide covers the change in detail.

Installation: Professional or No-Vac

The air handler is multi-position. MRCOOL's installation manual covers upflow, downflow, and horizontal left or right configurations, and horizontal installs need a secondary drain pan, which isn't supplied with the unit.

There are two ways to connect the refrigerant lines:

  • A conventional line set, installed by a licensed HVAC technician who brazes or flares the connections, then evacuates and charges the system. This is refrigerant work that calls for an EPA Section 608-certified technician.
  • An MRCOOL No-Vac Quick Connect line set, such as the 25 ft. R-454B No-Vac set. It comes pre-charged with R-454B and connects with screw-on Quick Connect valves, so no vacuum pump, brazing or refrigerant charging is needed.

MRCOOL's warranty doesn't require a professional installer when the No-Vac Quick Connect line set is used. Even so, a central system is a bigger project than a ductless mini split. You'll set the air handler, connect it to your ductwork and condensate drain, and provide the dedicated circuits the manual specifies, including a 208/230V circuit for the outdoor unit. Electrical work must meet local code, and many areas require a permit or a licensed electrician. Home Outlet Direct doesn't install equipment, so line up any contractors before your system arrives. Our line set guide explains the options in more detail.

Warranty: What MRCOOL Covers

These are the terms on MRCOOL's Hyper Heat 2nd Gen warranty page, checked in October 2026:

  • 10 years on parts, 10 years on the compressor and 10 years on labor, with no registration needed.
  • The first 90 days of labor are the installing company's responsibility. MRCOOL's labor coverage starts on day 91.
  • A state-certified or licensed HVAC contractor must install the system, unless you use MRCOOL's No-Vac Quick Connect line set.
  • MRCOOL only warrants units bought from an authorized dealer. Using an incompatible or unapproved condenser or air handler voids the warranty, and coverage ends if the unit is moved from where it was first installed.

Read MRCOOL's full terms before you buy. You can also add a protection plan at checkout.

Smart Thermostat and Controls

Hyper Heat 2nd Gen systems come with the MRCOOL Smart Thermostat. MRCOOL says the system works with Google Home and Alexa, and the thermostat also works with MRCOOL's SmartHVAC app for control from your phone. If you'd rather use a different thermostat, confirm compatibility in MRCOOL's installation manual first.

DIY Hyper Heat Ductless Mini Splits

If your home has no ductwork, or you want to heat and cool a single room or addition, MRCOOL DIY Hyper Heat brings the same cold-climate rating to a ductless mini split. MRCOOL designs its DIY systems for homeowner installation. Key specs from MRCOOL's catalog:

  • Sizes: 12,000 BTU (up to 23.5 SEER2) and 18,000 BTU (up to 21.2 SEER2), single zone, 230V.
  • Operating range: heats at -22°F and cools at up to 122°F, with ENERGY STAR Cold Climate certification.
  • Indoor units: wall mount air handler or OuttaSight ceiling cassette.
  • Installation: a DIY Quick Connect line set pre-charged with R-454B, so no vacuuming is needed, plus MRCOOL's DIYPro cable. Check each listing for the included line set length.
  • Controls: remote with Follow Me, the SmartHVAC app, and voice control through Alexa and Google Assistant.

DIY systems have their own warranty terms, so check MRCOOL's warranty page for your model.

Is MRCOOL Hyper Heat Right for Your Home?

  • Choose Hyper Heat 2nd Gen if you have ductwork, your winters regularly reach single digits or drop below zero, and you want MRCOOL's 10-year labor coverage.
  • Choose DIY Hyper Heat if you need cold-climate heating without ducts, for a single room or zone.
  • Consider VersaPro 2nd Gen if you live in a moderate climate. Our Hyper Heat vs. VersaPro comparison breaks down the differences.

Size any whole-home system with a Manual J load calculation rather than square footage alone. Note that MRCOOL's catalog rates the 24K Hyper Heat at 23,000 BTU of cooling and the 60K at 54,000 BTU. Our HVAC buying guide and mini split sizing guide walk through the basics.

A note on incentives: the federal 25C tax credit ended for systems placed in service after December 31, 2025. Many states and utilities still offer heat pump rebates, and some look for ENERGY STAR or cold-climate certification. Search your ZIP code in the ENERGY STAR rebate finder.

The Bottom Line

MRCOOL Hyper Heat is built for homeowners who need dependable heat in cold climates. Hyper Heat 2nd Gen covers whole-home ducted systems from 2 to 5 tons with R-454B refrigerant and a 10-year parts, compressor and labor warranty, and DIY Hyper Heat brings the same -22°F rating to single-room ductless installs.
