The 55,000 BTU number is the total system capacity of the outdoor unit. With a single-zone system it can cool one large space. With a multi-zone system it can be split across several rooms, where each indoor head is sized for its own room. Between sizes? Round up. A slightly larger unit runs efficiently at partial load, while an undersized one runs constantly.

How much space does a 55,000 BTU mini split cover?

This size is used for whole-home or multi-room heating and cooling. In a multi-zone system the total is shared across indoor heads, each sized for its own room.

Is 55,000 BTU per room or total?

It is the total capacity of the outdoor unit. On a multi-zone system, add up the BTU ratings of the indoor heads, and size each head for the room it serves.

What if my room is between two sizes?

Round up to the next size. A slightly oversized mini split runs efficiently at partial load.
