Range Hoods

A range hood captures smoke, grease, heat, steam and cooking odors at the cooktop and either vents them outside or filters and recirculates the air. It also keeps grease from building up on cabinets and walls. If you cook often, especially with high heat or on a gas range, a hood makes a noticeable difference, and some local codes require ventilation, so check with your installer.

Wall mount hoods attach to the wall above a range with no cabinet overhead. Under cabinet hoods mount to the bottom of the cabinet above the stove. Island hoods hang from the ceiling over an island cooktop and capture smoke from all sides. Ceiling hoods mount flush to the ceiling for open layouts. Insert hoods are built into custom cabinetry or a decorative hood shell so only the bottom shows. Many of these can be ducted outside or set up as ductless with a recirculating kit.

Choose a hood at least as wide as your cooktop; going one size up helps capture more smoke, especially over an island. For airflow, a common rule of thumb is about 100 CFM for every 10,000 BTU of gas cooktop output, or about 10 CFM per inch of cooktop width for electric and induction. Hoods above roughly 400 CFM may need make-up air under local building codes, so check with your installer.

Ducted hoods vent air outside through ductwork and remove heat, moisture and odors most effectively, so they're the better choice when you can run a duct. Ductless (recirculating) hoods pass air through grease and charcoal filters and return it to the kitchen, which works where outside venting isn't possible. Many hoods are convertible and can run ductless with a recirculating kit; the charcoal filters need replacing periodically.
