What is the Difference Between Wall Mount and Under Cabinet Range Hoods?

Under Cabinet Range Hoods

Under cabinet hood ranges are the most common hood fans you will find in a kitchen. They are discreet and small, but can be very powerful. They are affordably priced and easy to install.  They can be sleek and stylish, but with minimal fuss.

Wall Mount Range Hoods

Wall mount range hoods can be located against a wall. They typically resemble a more traditional chimney stack, but can come in various sizes and styles.  They can add a rustic charm or a modern spin to any kitchen.  They are more pricey than under-mount range hoods, but many prefer the look and presence of a wall mount.

Island Hood Fans

Island hood fans are similar to wall mount ones, except they, as the name implies, hang over the island. They can add a unique style and design to any kitchen.

Hood Inserts

Hood inserts are designed to be elegant, yet powerful.  They blend in seamlessly with any kitchen, as they are custom fit to be hidden beneath cabinets.

CFM

Another thing to consider when purchasing hood ranges is the CFM, which stands for cubic feet per minute.  CFM is basically how a fan moves air, determined by the volume of air it uses and the rate at which it moves.  Most standard fans use the 400 CFM, but some fans can go as high as 1200 CFM. They usually have 3 to 4 settings at various speeds.

Some people may complain about noise while using a hood fan, but it is inevitable that a fan will be somewhat loud.  Check out the product specifications to determine decibels.  Less than 65 decibels is usually a good sound level.

All hood ranges should match the size of the cooktop they hang above.  Similarly, it is necessary to maintain a unified look with the hood fan and the rest of your kitchen appliances.  If you choose stainless steel, then the rest of your kitchen appliances (oven, fridge, dishwasher, microwave etc) should also be stainless steel.
