Mini Split FAQ

What BTU rating should I choose for my air handler?

  • This depends on the coverage area/room size you are trying to heat/cool
  • An Air Handler's BTU is how powerful the fan is. A higher BTU rating will be able to heat/cool a larger area
Air Handler BTU Coverage Area/Room Size (Sq Ft.)*
9K BTU
Up to 375 Sq. ft
12K BTU Up to 500 Sq. ft
18K BTU Up to 750 Sq. ft
24k BTU Up to 1000 Sq. ft
36k BTU  Up to 1500 Sq. ft

*Ceiling height, insulation, and local climate may impact the coverage area. For example, an uninsulated room will require more power than a well insulated room.

Decent Company

I ordered a HVAC system and it arrived in a timely manner and with no apparent issues. I thought the system was defective once installed but it was the installers fault who wired it wrong. My only issue would be the fee (30% I believe) to return a defective item within the 30 day return policy. If it is defective the customer shouldn't have to pay a fee to return an item that is not operating as designed. Other than that this is a good company.

Pretty Easy Install and Works Great!

Installed my own central HP system. It was a bit of work but nothing beyond a person with basic mechanical and electrical skills. It took me a while because I had to remove the existing electric forced air furnace from a pretty tight place. Some custom sheet metal work and a bit of custom electrical too. Worked perfectly when powered up and I actually like the thermostat provided, although I wish it was clearer how to set up a temperature set-back schedule. Pre-charged refrigerant piping was something new and I liked that too. The best thing is that my electric utility forked out $4,000 and that paid for the unit!

Is this the best way?

In the last few years I have installed four 12000 btu Mr Cool units and one of the 27000 btu units with two 12000 btu air handlers. I am happy with the performance of all of them, but if I had it to do over again, I would install two of the 12000 btu units instead of the 27000 btu unit. The price would be approximately the same, but the smaller units are much easier to deal with. The fact that the 12000 btu units require only 120 v power means that you can often make use of existing wiring rather than run a new line. The 27000 unit is quite heavy. It is much more difficult to move around . I didn't realize that fluid is pumped to both units even if only one of them is turned on. This results in confusing readings on the app and it probably results in reduced efficiency. I many cases using two smaller units rather than a large one would allow use of shorter lines. I appreciate that fact that HOD makes it easy to order units with appropriate line lengths rather than being forced to use standard sizes that may be longer than necessary.

Four Ton VersaPro Insatll

Instead of waiting for my 18-year-old heat pump to stop operating in the middle of summer here in Florida, I decided to get the McCool 4 ton Versa before my old system got me. So, my Mr Cool arrived a few days after I ordered it and kept it in the garage until the weather cooled off since the Versa air handler was to be installed in the garage attic. However in the meantime, I ran the pressurized line set, purchased a few additional tools needed for the installation and hit the ground running when we got our first cool days. I took the old system offline by capturing the r22 freon in the old heat pump condenser, cut the lines and first installed with a little help, the Mr Cool outside condenser, the only thing that really required help. The attic air handler required me to pull the fan and the coil that lightened up the unit considerably, also allowing me to navigate it into the attic where I reinstalled both the fan and coil. Since the infrastructure was there from the old unit, it just required me to look up the existing AC and thermostat, mate the ductwork to the air handler and hook up the line set. I just followed the instructions and it all went very smoothly.

Finally, I hit the thermostat on switch and within a few minutes, had heat just in time for a 40° evening. Woke up to a cozy warm house for a change. Am very satisfied with my ducted Versa system and just in time because pulling apart the old system, it was very clear it wasn't going to make it another year or a week and feel great for saving thousands of dollars that I would have spent for a lesser system than this high-tech heat pump inverter system from MrCool.
